Hackney Housing Services have developed the Repair Related Moves Housing Policy.

The Repair-Related Moves Policy sets out our approach to managing the housing and welfare needs of Hackney Council tenants who need to move from their homes because of a repair-related reason.

Hackney Housing Services has created this policy. 

Who is this policy for? 

This policy applies to secure and introductory tenants and those with demoted tenancies, in housing owned by Hackney Council. This includes homes managed by Tenant Management Organisations. 

This policy does not cover assets such as garages, shops or leasehold, shared ownership or homeless households living in temporary accommodation properties. If there is a repair-related reason why it is no longer possible for a homeless household to be accommodated in a Hackney Council-owned temporary accommodation, the Temporary Accommodation team within Benefits and Homelessness Prevention will arrange a move to an alternative home. 

What do we mean by ‘Repair Related Move?

The council will consider offering a household a ‘Repair related Move’ when their home cannot be safely occupied because of repair-related reasons. This includes: 

• Permanent Repair-Related Moves - these are granted ONLY when the main home cannot be made habitable by repair and renovation work. This happens exceptionally rarely. 

• Temporary Repair-Related Moves - where the home is temporarily uninhabitable because of a repair-related reason. This can either occur in an emergency or as a result of planned works needing to take place. 

What happens now? 

We want to find out if people who live in Hackney’s council-managed homes support this policy. We are also seeking the views of professionals and organisations working with people who have experienced significant repair-related issues in their home.

The consultation feedback will be used to produce a final policy, which if approved by Cabinet, will then be published. An action plan - where we set out specific actions and how we will measure our progress - is being developed and will be published alongside the final policy.
