"Why Vaccinate?" Campaign

Overview

United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) are working in partnership with Hackney Council and other London Boroughs to promote a London-wide campaign to talk to and have conversations about the importance of vaccinations.

Serious diseases like measles, mumps and rubella can cause serious harm to people at any stage of their lives. We have seen an increase in these and other illnesses, that can and have been controlled through vaccination programs like the MMR vaccinations the NHS provides for children. Vaccinations are not just for children, and anyone can get vaccinated at any stage of their lives, even if they have had a vaccination before, or if they cannot remember if they have had any. 

Over the last six months, we have been working with communities to develop a communications campaign that will help them to talk more about the importance of vaccinations, and keep our underserved communities more informed, so they can make better decisions for themselves and their families. 

What did we ask?

We asked questions like:

  1. How do you get your health information? And where would you like to get your information from? 
  2. What kind of information works for you? And what does not work for you?
  3. Who do you trust to talk to you about health information?

Communities told us to

  1. Keep it simple to understand and don’t use too much text
  2. Use images of people who look like them, or people from their community
  3. People on the poster should be easy to relate to, who would understand them and the problems they may face
  4. Community and faith leaders and health representatives, should be from their communities to help increase trust
  5. Consider putting information into community languages

What have we done?

  1. Created and tested multiple sets of designs with our communities and narrowed down to two. We did some more changes based on additional feedback and chose one, which our communities preferred
  2. Completed the first photoshoot with volunteers from our communities to make sure they look like you
  3. Tested different messages to find out which one would help them to start talking more about the importance of vaccinations
  4. Considered how best and when to provide translated versions of the assets
