Improvements To Your Waste and Recycling Facilities

Overview

Waste and recycling in Hackney

The recycling rate on our estates is currently between 8% to 10%, so we are working hard to make recycling easier for residents. For example, we are aware that recycling bins are often further away form blocks than the waste bins, which can be an inconvenience for residents. In addition, the cost of unblocking chutes is around £75,000 a year across all our estates. The money saved by closing chutes will be invested in supporting other estates.

What is proposed?

Hackney Council would like to make a number of changes to the waste facilities on your estate to help you recycle more. We are planning to close the waste chutes and build new bin stores and more recycling bins. We are planning to do this so that bin stores will be located close to the entrance of the estate and will enable residents to dispose their waste and recycling at the same time.

Reasons for the proposed changes

  • Minimise fire risk

  • Save council taxpayers money so more money could be spent on improving your local area

  • Reduce the impact of the increasing costs of waste disposal with blocked chutes

  • Reduce noise pollution which is caused by rubbish going down chutes

  • Increase recycling rates and improve the estate environment

  • Improve resident convenience by having waste and recycling bins
