Connecting Hoxton: Tyssen Street
Overview
Hackney Council is working with residents, community organisations and design teams to improve public spaces and community facilities in Hoxton, creating a more vibrant and welcoming neighbourhood for everyone. You can find out more via our online Connecting Hoxton hub.
In previous conversations with residents and the local community, you told us you would like:
- More trees and plants
- To slow down cars and cyclists, and protect pedestrians
- Places to sit and rest - though some people were concerned these might attract antisocial behaviour
- To maintain the number of parking places
You also said you thought the playgrounds were currently poorly positioned and underused.
What we're proposing
Based on what you told us, we have designed some improvements to the courtyard area that will:
- Make the walking and cycling route through the estate clearer, wider and easier to use (see number 1 on the plan of the estate, below)
- Keep all 26 parking spaces (16), but move them away from the central courtyard to expand the green space by Cordelia House
- Introduce a tree, hedge and grass between homes in Rosalind House and the main parking area as a green buffer (17)
- Move the play area from the corner of the carpark to an expanded green area near Cordelia House, adding new swings and a see-saw (10, 11, 12)
- Remove the underused play equipment next to Cordelia House (15)
- Plant 11 new trees across the courtyard and new flowerbeds around the edges (3, 4)
- Install benches and raised planters for community gardening (7, 9)

Before / after
What the plants and play equipment might look like
So that we can make sure the improvements meet the needs of residents, we would like to know what you think of these ideas.
Please let us know by Monday 20 July 2026.
