Worship Street and Clifton Street - Proposed Permanent Public Realm Improvements

Closes 9 Jan 2026

Opened 28 Nov 2025

Overview

We are proposing to upgrade Worship Street, specifically south of Worship Square, and Clifton Street, from its junction with Worship Street to the junction with Dysart Street, by creating a new pedestrian crossing on Worship Street to improve north-south pedestrian movement and to make the northern section of Clifton Street more appealing. This will support the market traders during weekdays and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment for residents and workers through new landscaping, high-quality paving on footways, and resurfaced carriageways on both Clifton and Worship Street.

We are now seeking your views on the proposals.

Why are these changes being proposed?

This document outlines proposals for the regeneration of Worship Street, specifically south of Worship Square, and Clifton Street, from its junction with Worship Street to the junction with Dysart Street. The main goals of this scheme are to create a new pedestrian crossing on Worship Street to improve north-south pedestrian movement and to make the northern section of Clifton Street more appealing. This will support the market traders during weekdays and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment for residents and workers through new landscaping, high-quality paving on footways, and resurfaced carriageways on both Clifton and Worship Street.

The public realm scheme aims to:

  • Improve safety by introducing a new informal crossing point.
  • Reduce car dominance.
  • Decrease potential road accidents.
  • Provide a greener and more appealing environment for market traders along Clifton Street.
  • Enhance the character of the area for all residents and businesses.
  • Improve the pedestrian experience by changing the feel, look, and use of roads through low-level planting.
  • Resurface footways and carriageways with high-quality materials where the budget allows.

What are the proposals?

Our aim is to enhance the pedestrian experience and improve safety for all users. The proposals include:

  • Introducing a new raised informal crossing south of Worship Square to help the pedestrians moving north-south and increase safety and accessibility for local residents and premises.
  • Installing three Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) planters along Clifton Street, which will include low level planting and where possible trees. SuDS mimic natural drainage, capturing surface water to prevent sewer system overload and significantly reducing flooding, especially in urban areas.
  • Providing two disabled parking bays on Worship Street on the south-eastern side of Worship Square (as shown on the drawing below).
  • Providing one permanent loading bay on Worship Street on the south-western side of Worship Square (as shown on the drawing below).
  • Installing a total of 20 cycle stands, of which 13 will be located on Worship Square (as shown on the drawing below).
  • Resurfacing all nearby pavement areas with yorkstone (as shown on the drawing below).
  • Resurfacing the adjacent carriageway areas (as shown on the drawing below).
  • Removing a total of 47.50  meters of motorcycle parking along the eastern side of Clifton Street.
