Selman and Wellday- Future Development
Overview
The Selman & Wellday car park and garage site is one of 14 locations across Hackney that will make up a new programme to build around 400 new homes. 75% of the new homes will be council homes for social rent and prioritised for local residents through our local lettings policy – which means current residents in the local area with established housing needs would get first preference for new Council rented homes. This is part of the Council’s commitment to start building, or supporting partners to build, 1,000 new homes for social rent by 2026 to help tackle the housing shortage and provide a high-quality, genuinely affordable home to those who need it.
The Selman & Wellday site has been identified as having the potential to accommodate new homes without the demolition of existing homes as well as wider improvements to the estate and neighbourhood.
In summer 2022, we talked with local residents about proposals to replace the garages at Selman & Wellday House with new homes. Since then, the Council’s Cabinet has given us the go-ahead to work with a design team and residents to develop plans for the new homes on these estates.
We’ve appointed a design team and specialist consultants to develop proposals for the Selman & Wellday car park and garage site, including:
Architects: AJP
Landscape: Periscope
Cost Consultant: Bristow
Planning Consultant: HTA Planning
Multi Disciplinary Engineering Consultant: XCO2
Most of the design team have lived or worked in Hackney for many years. They have a broad mix of backgrounds and cultures and are excited by the opportunity to work with the community on these much-needed new homes and surrounding improvements.
Your feedback
Hackney Council’s Housing Regeneration & Delivery team would like to gather residents’ views on the external areas, shared spaces and public realm on the estate, which will inform the design of the new homes and the surrounding neighbourhood. This survey will run from the 6th November 2024 until 27th November 2024.
This survey accompanies a public drop-in exhibition on the 6th November 2024 at the Gascoyne 2 Community Hall from 4pm-7pm.
Please complete the following survey questions and let us know your thoughts. Please share any additional ideas and opinions in the free text boxes provided.
