Queensbridge Road (Albion Drive - Richmond Road) Pedestrian and Cycling Improvements
Overview
In our Transport Strategy, we have committed to making Hackney’s roads safer for everyone living in, working in and visiting the borough. We aim to create an environment that will promote and encourage more walking and cycling as these are clean, healthy and efficient ways to travel, to help improve air quality and reduce emissions within the local area.
Since 2020, the Council has introduced the following traffic calming, major cycling and pedestrian accessibility improvements at Queensbridge Road between Hackney Road and Albion Drive:
- North and southbound raised cycle tracks
- Continuous pedestrian crossings (blended pedestrian crossings) on all side roads
- A signal controlled pedestrian / cycle crossing replaced the informal crossing at Denne Terrace by the canal
- A shared pedestrian and cycle zebra (parallel) crossing was introduced by Dunloe Street
- Pedestrian countdowns, low level cycle signals with an ‘early release’ facility for cyclists at Whiston Road and Hackney Road
- The existing zebra crossings at Brownlow Road, Shrubland Road and Edith Street were installed on raised tables for step free crossing facilities
- Refurbished the pavements and roadway
- Planted trees, installed rain gardens and seating
The Council is now seeking your views on similar improvements to be implemented between Albion Drive and Richmond Road, which when complete will improve walking and cycling facilities between Hackney Road and Richmond Road.
What is the proposed scheme?
Queensbridge Road (Albion Drive - Richmond Road)
The following measures will be implemented as part of the improvements at Queensbridge Road:
- Installing raised cycle tracks using standard materials. An example of a raised cycle track next to pavements is shown on the following photograph
- Refurbishing the pavements and roadway using standard paving and resurfacing materials
- Installing raised junction tables with step free crossing facilities and improved cycle accessibility at the Richmond Road and Middleton Road junctions
- Installing raised side road entry junctions with continuous pavements (blended pedestrian crossings) at Albion Drive, Mapledene Road, Lavender Grove, Lenthall Road and Jacaranda Grove
- Installing ‘exit only’ traffic lanes with short sections of contraflow cycle lanes at Albion Drive, Mapledene Road, and Lenthall Road to reduce interactions between cyclists and left turning traffic.
- Installing the existing zebra crossing on a raised table near Mapledene Road
- Installing rain gardens with trees and shrubs at Mapledene Road, Albion Drive and Lenthall Road
Scriven Street / Queensbridge Road Junction
More than 3000 vehicles per day use Scriven Street and there remains a high risk of collisions between turning traffic and cyclists. Scriven Street will be closed to motorised traffic at the Queensbridge Road junction to reduce interactions between cyclists and turning traffic.

What are the potential impacts of the scheme?
If approved, the scheme would add more walking and cycling facilities between Hackney Road and Richmond Road. It would also result in the loss of 33 car parking spaces between Middleton Road and Richmond Road. Parking stress surveys carried out in May 2025 have shown that the side roads have sufficient capacity to accommodate the loss in car parking spaces at Queensbridge Road.
