Overview

Hackney Council has published the report on the first stage of consultation into potential improvements to Seven Sisters Road.

Seven Sisters Road is a busy road which cuts through Woodberry Down. The stretch of road in Hackney is six lanes wide with few crossing points and contributes to air pollution in the area. The road has seen 106 recorded accidents in the last three years, including one fatal accident.

Hackney Council and Berkeley Homes have been working together on proposals for Woodberry Down since 2009. The 2014 masterplan for the area, adopted after extensive consultation with local residents and other key stakeholders, includes a commitment to narrowing Seven Sisters Road. This commitment was reinforced by the Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, at the Hackney Cycling Conference in June.

This first stage of consultation aimed to understand how people use Seven Sisters Road and the kind of improvements required. It also presented them with ideas on how the road could be changed and asked for their preferred options.

Headline results

• 1,800 responses were received
• 1026 were paper copies hand delivered as a single batch on the final day of the consultation. 100% of these responses stated that no improvements are needed.
• 776 responses were submitted online or at consultation events. 90% of these responses state that improvements are needed.
• The most popular improvements are increased pedestrian crossings and segregated cycle lanes.
• 94% of respondents living within 200 metres of Seven Sisters Road (49 people) agree that improvements are needed.

What happens next

The Council will meet with Berkeley Homes and Transport for London to develop a detailed design for Seven Sisters Road. The issues and ideas raised in the first stage of consultation will influence the design.

The Council will run workshops with Woodberry Down Community Organisation to set out the results of the consultation and get residents’ input on the design as it develops.
The Council will engage with ward members and the wider Stamford Hill community around the emerging scheme and to provide an explanation of its likely impacts and benefits.

Consultation on a proposed design will take place early next year. The decision on any changes that are implemented lies with Transport for London.

Cllr Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Sustainability, said:

“People should not have to live with a six lane road cutting through their neighbourhood and it’s clear from this consultation that those who live closest to Seven Sisters Road agree.

The decision on narrowing Seven Sisters Road has been taken, after extensive consultation with residents. The next stage of the consultation will develop a detailed design which we hope will make the area safer and more pleasant.  Making “no improvements” is not an option for this congested, polluted road.”
