Hackney’s Global Future: Reviewing Our International Partnerships

Overview

Share your views on Hackney's international twinning arrangements

Hackney Council is currently conducting a comprehensive review of our international twinning arrangements. As an actively anti-racist and human rights-respecting local authority, it is important that our international partnerships remain relevant and reflect the shared values of our residents.

A cross-party Twinning Working Group has been established by the Council to oversee this review.

Flags for Germany, Israel and Barbados are shown in muted versions of the flags' colours as these are currently inactive relationships.

Hackney's history of twinning arrangements

For over 60 years the council has built twinning arrangements with towns abroad. The links are non-political, non-sectarian and multi-faith relationships and are self-sustaining based on the community connections; the council does not have an active role in managing the twinning links.

Hackney currently has active twinning links with Suresnes in France and St George’s in Grenada. The council also has inactive twinning agreements with Haifa, (Israel), Gottingen (Germany), and Bridgetown (Barbados)

Share your views

We are inviting residents and partners to share their views on how the Council should approach international twinning in the future. We want to ensure that our international links - both existing and new - are aligned with our commitment to peacebuilding, climate justice, local democracy, and mutual respect.

Your responses to this survey will provide vital evidence for the Twinning Working Group as they consider our overall policy framework and the criteria used to evaluate our international links. We are also asking for your views on a proposal to end the existing relationship between Hackney and Haifa.

Please note: this survey is not a referendum, the views shared will be considered alongside other relevant information by the Twinning Working Group and will inform its recommendations to Full Council

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective.
