Arden Estate – Community Growing

Overview

This project is transforming underused lawn areas on the Arden Estate into community growing spaces.

The new spaces will provide opportunities for residents to grow food and plants, learn new skills and take part in shared activities. The project aims to make better use of existing green space while creating places that residents can help shape and care for.

Work is underway to introduce community growing spaces on the Arden Estate.

What is happening

Existing lawn areas on the estate are being developed into spaces that can support community growing and shared use.

The project will create opportunities for residents to:

  • take part in planting and growing food, flowers and other plants
  • help care for and maintain the growing spaces
  • learn and share gardening skills
  • take part in informal activities with neighbours
  • make better use of green spaces close to their homes.

The detailed layout and operation of the growing spaces will continue to be developed with residents and the organisations responsible for managing the estate.

Planning and preparation are underway for the new growing spaces.

Next steps

Growing areas will be introduced in phases, with opportunities for residents to take part in planting and other activities as the project develops.

Ongoing participation

Residents will be encouraged to remain involved in using and caring for the spaces once they are established.

What we heard from local people

Local people expressed an interest in community growing and opportunities to produce food and plants close to home.

Residents also told us they would like to see underused green spaces put to better use, with more opportunities for shared activities and learning.

There was support for creating spaces that bring neighbours together and give residents a practical role in shaping and caring for their local environment.

How this project responds

This project responds by turning underused lawn areas into practical and welcoming spaces for community growing.

It will give residents opportunities to take part in planting, maintenance and shared activities while learning new skills and spending time with neighbours.

By adding a clear purpose to existing green space, the project will improve how these areas are used and increase their value to the local community.

The long-term success of the growing spaces will depend on continued resident participation and appropriate arrangements for maintenance and management.
