Geffrye Estate – Habitat Creation

Overview

This project has enhanced green spaces across the Geffrye Estate by introducing new planting and creating habitats for wildlife.

New wildflower areas, trees, hedgerows and landscaping features have increased biodiversity while creating a greener, more attractive environment for residents and visitors to enjoy.

What has happened

Habitat creation works have been completed across the estate to improve biodiversity and make green spaces more attractive and welcoming.

The improvements include:

• wildflower planting and perennial bulbs introduced into existing lawn areas
• native and fruiting hedgerows
• 47 new trees planted across the estate
• new fruit trees
• landscaping designed to support insects, birds and other wildlife.

The new planting has been designed to create a richer and more varied landscape while supporting local biodiversity. The planting will now be maintained by the Council's Grounds Maintenance Team.

How this project responds

The completed improvements have increased biodiversity across the estate by introducing a wider variety of planting and creating habitats for insects, birds and other wildlife.

Wildflower meadows, native hedgerows, fruit trees and additional tree planting provide greater ecological value while making the estate greener and more visually interesting throughout the year.

Alongside supporting nature, the improvements create more welcoming outdoor spaces that residents can enjoy for relaxation, recreation and everyday use.
