Hoxton Green Link - Regan Way

Overview

This project will introduce new planting and public realm improvements along Regan Way, creating a greener and more welcoming walking connection through the Arden Estate.

Regan Way provides an important north-to-south route between Hoxton Street, Arden Estate Community Hall, Purcell Gardens and Shoreditch Park. The project will begin creating a continuous green link between these places while making the route easier and more pleasant to use.

What is happening

We are developing improvements to reduce the amount of hard surfacing along Regan Way and introduce more planting and accessible green space.

The wider proposals include:

• removing areas of unnecessary hard surfacing
• introducing biodiverse planting and new areas of meadow
• improving the existing former planter near Bacchus Walk
• widening and improving pedestrian routes where possible
• improving the crossing at Regan Way and Bacchus Walk
• relocating obstructions that currently restrict pedestrian movement
• creating a greener connection towards Arden Estate Community Hall, Purcell Gardens and Shoreditch Park.

Why Regan Way?

Regan Way currently contains extensive areas of asphalt and car parking, with relatively narrow footways on both sides of the street.

Bollards, fencing and the former raised planter near Bacchus Walk can make parts of the route feel constrained. The existing blue badge parking space also affects access to the dropped kerb at the junction.

At the same time, Regan Way benefits from mature lime trees, recently planted street trees and existing grassed areas. These provide a strong foundation for introducing more planting, increasing biodiversity and creating a clearer green route through the area.

The first phase

The first phase focuses on the former raised planter at the junction of Regan Way and Bacchus Walk.

The concrete covering will be removed to improve conditions for the existing trees and shrubs. A pilot wildflower meadow is also proposed, creating additional habitat and providing food and shelter for pollinators, insects and small animals.

This will form the first green stepping stone along the route. Further improvements may be introduced over time as funding and delivery opportunities become available.

How this project responds

The project responds by turning areas of hard surfacing into planted space and making better use of the existing trees and green areas along Regan Way.

The first phase will create additional wildlife habitat, improve the appearance of the junction with Bacchus Walk and begin establishing a clearer green connection through the Arden Estate.

Over time, the wider proposals could also improve pedestrian movement, make crossings easier to use and create a more direct and welcoming route towards local community facilities and green spaces.
