Hoxton Green Link – Street Trees
Overview
This project will introduce new street trees along key routes through Hoxton, helping to create greener, healthier and more attractive streets for everyone.
Tree planting forms part of the wider Hoxton Green Link, which aims to strengthen connections between neighbourhoods, parks and community spaces while making walking through Hoxton more comfortable and enjoyable.
In progress
Tree planting is being planned and delivered along key routes across Hoxton as part of the wider Connecting Hoxton programme.
What is happening
We are identifying opportunities to introduce new street trees along key walking routes where they can provide the greatest benefit to local people and the wider environment.
New trees will help:
- provide shade during warmer weather
- improve the appearance of streets
- support better air quality and biodiversity
- create more pleasant walking routes between homes, community facilities and green spaces.
Tree planting will take place where space and underground services allow, alongside other public realm improvements that strengthen green connections across Hoxton.
Project timeline
2026
Tree planting opportunities are being identified alongside the detailed design of Connecting Hoxton projects.
Future planting phases
Tree planting will continue as individual projects are delivered and suitable locations become available.
What we heard from local people
Throughout the Connecting Hoxton programme, local people consistently highlighted the importance of introducing more greenery into streets and public spaces.
Residents told us they would like to see more trees providing shade, improving air quality and making everyday walking routes feel greener and more attractive.
People also supported creating stronger links between existing parks, estates and public spaces, helping nature become a more visible part of everyday life.
How this project responds
This project responds by introducing new street trees that make everyday routes greener, more comfortable and more welcoming.
Rather than creating isolated areas of planting, the project contributes towards a wider green network that connects streets, estates and open spaces across Hoxton.
Alongside environmental benefits such as increased biodiversity, shade and improved air quality, new trees will help create streets that are more pleasant places to spend time and move through. This supports the wider ambition of the Hoxton Green Link identified in Hackney's Green Infrastructure Strategy.
Supporting information
The street tree programme forms part of the wider Connecting Hoxton vision to improve public spaces and strengthen green connections across the neighbourhood. New planting will be delivered where it is practical and appropriate, taking account of existing utilities, street layouts and long-term maintenance requirements.
