Market Arrival – Gateway Signage
Overview
Hoxton Street Market is one of the most recognisable and valued parts of the area, with a long history and a strong role in everyday community life.
This project focuses on improving how people arrive at the market by introducing gateway features at key entry points along the street. By clearly marking where the market begins and creating a more defined sense of arrival, the project supports the wider ambition to strengthen Hoxton’s identity and celebrate what makes the area distinctive.
Complete
The first phase of this project has been completed with the delivery of the At Home mural at the southern entrance to Hoxton Street Market.
What is happening
The project has explored how new signage and gateway features could make the entrances to Hoxton Street Market clearer and more recognisable to people approaching from surrounding streets.
It has also considered how a more consistent visual identity, including coordinated colours, materials and design elements, could reflect Hoxton’s character and create a more cohesive and welcoming environment.
The first completed element is the At Home mural, located at the corner of Hoxton Street and Crondall Street on the side of a residential block on Arden Estate.
What we heard from local people
Through engagement on the Connecting Hoxton programme, local people consistently highlighted the importance of Hoxton Street Market to the area’s identity.
People wanted the market to feel more visible and celebrated, with clearer entry points and a more welcoming presence for those arriving from nearby streets.
There was also support for vibrant public spaces, creative interventions and design that reflects local identity and culture.
How this project responds
This project responds directly to feedback from local people by making Hoxton Street Market more visible, welcoming and recognisable as one of the area’s most important destinations.
Gateway features and a more consistent visual identity help signal where the market begins, making it easier for residents and visitors to find and navigate.
By celebrating the market’s character through thoughtful design and public art, the project strengthens local identity while creating a stronger sense of arrival for everyone visiting Hoxton Street Market.
The At Home mural

The At Home mural was created by artist Mohammed Z. Rahman in collaboration with PEER Ambassadors, local residents, market stall holders, shop owners and other local stakeholders.
Developed over an eight-month period of research and community engagement, the mural reflects ideas gathered through workshops, conversations and feedback.
It creates a visible and welcoming gateway into Hoxton Street Market while celebrating local identity through public art.
