Market Infrastructure – Power and Gazebos

Overview

This project will improve the infrastructure that supports traders on Hoxton Street Market, helping create a more attractive, sustainable and resilient market for everyone.

By investing in cleaner power, better equipment and improved market facilities, the project aims to support day-to-day trading, enhance the appearance of the market and help Hoxton Street Market remain an affordable place to shop, work and visit.

In progress

Cleaner battery systems have already been introduced. New market gazebos and environmentally friendly carrier bags are being developed, alongside plans to expand access to power across more of the market.

What is happening

We are investing in improvements that will make Hoxton Street Market easier and more sustainable to operate for traders while creating a better experience for shoppers.

Working closely with traders, new battery systems have already been introduced to reduce reliance on petrol generators. This helps reduce noise and emissions while providing a cleaner source of power for day-to-day market activity.

The next phase will introduce new market gazebos to create a more consistent and practical setup for traders. Environmentally friendly carrier bags are also being developed to reduce single-use plastics and improve the market’s visual identity.

We are also exploring how power infrastructure could be extended to additional stall locations along Hoxton Street. This would build on the initial improvements and could provide more traders with reliable access to electricity while reducing the need for temporary power equipment.

Future power improvements

The planned next phase will consider how power connections can be expanded across more of Hoxton Street Market.

The work will look at:

  • extending access to power across additional stall locations
  • improving the reliability and flexibility of the market’s power supply
  • reducing reliance on generators and temporary equipment
  • supporting a wider range of traders and market activities

The extent, location and technical design of any additional power connections will be confirmed following further assessment, design development and agreement on funding.

What we heard from local people

People told us that Hoxton Street Market is an important part of the neighbourhood and wanted to see it continue to thrive.

Feedback highlighted the importance of supporting traders with practical infrastructure that makes trading easier and helps the market operate reliably.

People also wanted the market to remain welcoming, affordable and attractive for residents and visitors.

There was support for improvements that reduce environmental impacts and create a cleaner, quieter and more pleasant market environment.

How this project responds

This project responds by providing practical improvements that support traders while enhancing the overall market experience.

Cleaner battery technology reduces noise and emissions, while new gazebos will improve the appearance and functionality of market stalls. Environmentally friendly carrier bags will also help reduce plastic waste and create a stronger shared identity across the market.

The proposed expansion of power infrastructure would extend these benefits to more traders by improving access to reliable electricity and allowing the market to operate more flexibly.

Together, these improvements will help Hoxton Street Market remain a resilient, welcoming and affordable destination that continues to serve local people for years to come.
