Shoreditch Library Entrance

Overview

This project is improving the public space outside Shoreditch Library, making the entrance more visible, welcoming and easier to use.

The improvements support the library’s role as an important local community space, while creating a greener and more attractive setting on Hoxton Street.

In progress project

The public realm entrance improvements were completed in January 2026.

Additional artwork on the library pillars and new banners will be designed and installed with New City College during 2026.

What is happening

Improvements have been made to the area outside Shoreditch Library to create a clearer, greener and more welcoming entrance from Hoxton Street.

The completed works include:

  • two new trees
  • new planting and greening
  • a new raised table in the road
  • pavement improvements
  • a new welcome mosaic.

These changes improve the visibility of the library entrance and the quality of the surrounding public space, helping it feel more inviting and supporting informal use and activity.

The next stage of the project will introduce artwork to the library pillars and new banners. These will be designed and installed in collaboration with New City College.

What we heard from local people

Earlier engagement highlighted the importance of libraries as local community spaces.

People also expressed a desire for public areas that feel more welcoming and are better used, as well as interest in introducing more greening and improving local streets.

How this project responds

This project responds by making Shoreditch Library more visible and accessible from Hoxton Street.

The new trees, planting, raised table, pavement improvements and welcome mosaic create a greener and more inviting setting around the entrance. They also improve the quality and usability of the public space outside the library.

The planned artwork and banners will build on these improvements by making the entrance more distinctive and strengthening the library’s presence on the street.
