Lower Clapton Road Accessibility and Traffic Calming Improvements

Closed 17 Dec 2016

Opened 29 Nov 2016

Overview

The Council is committed to improving the quality of life for people who live and work in
the borough.

To achieve this, the Council will, from time to time, fund projects that encourage people to venture out more and enjoy the lovely neighbourhoods that the borough offers.

This document sets out Hackney Council’s proposals and seeks the views of residents on improvements to be carried out at Lower Clapton Road to the east of Clapton Pond.

Recently the Council secured funding for improvements at the Lower Clapton Road - Millfields Road junction in response to several requests by members of the public to resolve accessibility related issues at the Lower Clapton Road – Millfields Road junction.

The junction is located next to Clapton Pond, a historical park dating back to the 17th Century with two gardens split in the middle by Newick Road. The park is quite popular with local residents however, the surrounding roads are quite busy and this can be discouraging to potential visitors to the park. Other issues include uncontrolled loading and parking outside shops at Millfields Road and the very wide Lower Clapton Road – Millfields Road – Mildenhall Road junction which is not very accessible for pedestrians.

Why your views matter

The proposals at the Lower Clapton Road – Millfields Road – Mildenhall Road junction
include:

• Removing the bus stand at Lower Clapton Road to the east of the park to leave the road

• free of buses and coaches to help create a tranquil environment.

• Slightly extending the bus stand at Newick Road to allow the bus stand to hold two buses for route 393. Access to the bus stand will be via Lower Clapton Road to the north of Newick Road. This bus stand will be the last drop off point for route 393 passengers.

• Installing a new junction entry table at the Newick Road / Lower Clapton Road (south of Newick Road) junction for step free crossing facilities for pedestrians.

What happens next

Your views will be taken into account as part of the detailed design process. Works are
expected to start in January 2017 should we get a positive response. Should the Council agree to proceed with these proposals, residents and businesses will receive a letter and see public notices advising theme on exact start dates of works.
